“A young girl is missing,” said the news reporter. I looked at my husband and shook my head. My heart ached for the family. Day after day the news kept us informed on the search. Local police stride up and down the neighborhood searching house after house for any evidence. All cars leaving and returning in the area are diligently searched. A nightly prayer vigil takes place at the family’s home. A mother pleads for her daughter’s safe return. My husband and I also join in prayer for her safe return. Volunteers comb near-by vacant fields. Days drag unbearable long. The missing girl has yet to be found. Where is she? Lord, how could anyone harm an innocent child?
A young girl rides her favorite pink bike up and down the street…and never returns. Be careful…don’t talk to strangers.
The news reports another Amber Alert. We search each child for the familiar face. Thankfully, they are found safe and alive.
A car drives slowly by as the girls walk to school. He asks a question to lure them closer to his car. Be careful, don’t talk to strangers. They run to school and tell their teacher. The police are called and they patrol the area up and down the street.
Lord, keep her safe and bring her home alive, we continued to pray.
I reached for the remote control to turn off the TV as the late news began. The lead story: an update on the missing girl. It was not what we or anyone wanted to hear. Sandra’s remains were found, “in a suitcase, in a collection pond,” close to her home. I shook my head and cried. It happened again! When will it end? Lord, what can we do stop this tragedy from happening again?
In memory of Sandra Cantu.
A precious child who died a senseless death.

Thanks for this little tribute to one of God's innocent children.
