My Burden

Mother, lover, mystical beauty
Your squalor and vistas intrigue me.
You tug at my pockets and my heart
So perfectly at ease with your poverty.
Coca-cola in hand perched on a rail
Out of reach of the rats
Children grin whitely out of starving faces.
Sweets memsahib!
I smile despite my anguish
How I want to tell you about Jesus!
He will set you free
Yet you have so many bonds, traditions.
I reach into my pocket
Suffer little children to come to me…
I start with a smile.

Your monuments are a statement of love
I see them everywhere.
Your traditions permeate your days
Hanging sickly- sweet in the air like the
Heavy scent of incense.
Others fawn but all I see is darkness
I can tell of another monument to love
Eternal, overshadowing all others
A Saviour crucified!
The burden I feel is great.
Then I remember that all You require is my weakness
To make perfect Your strength.
Take me where you will Lord
I start with a smile.

Hi Susan. Just wanted to leave a quick note to let you know your entry, "My Burden," actually did very well in the India Challenge. Although you didn't receive an award, you made it into the Highest Rankings for Level 1, placing 15th in that Level. Competition in Level 1 is always very intense, so well done.
