My older brother was sitting at the kitchen table, busy scribbling into his notebook. He had a textbook cracked open. I leaned over his shoulder and said, “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like,” He said annoyed. “Can’t you find something better to do then bug me? Why don’t you do your homework?”
“I don’t have any,” I said.
“Well, good for you. Now, get lost.”
I left him there and walked into the living room. As I was making my way to the couch, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. When I looked to see what it was, I about jumped out of my skin. There was a man standing out on our balcony and he was looking right at me. The sliding glass door was locked but I was still scared. I didn’t know what to make of this man. I didn’t know how he got up on our balcony, because we lived on the third floor. He also had me puzzled because he was dressed like Jesus. He had on a tan robe. He had long brown hair, and a beard. I wasn’t sure if this was some sort of prank or if this guy wanted to hurt us and take our money.
“Kip! Kip! Come here there is some weirdo on our balcony.”
My brother rushed in and looked out on the balcony. He turned at me. His voice turned, too. “What is your problem? I need to get my homework done before mom gets home.”
I looked at him shocked. “What do you mean? What about that guy out there?”
“There isn’t any one out there, you idiot.” He stomped back to the kitchen.
I stood there dumbfounded. My heart raced. I looked at the man on the balcony in his robe and began to realize who this was.
“Jesus,” I asked?
The man nodded. My heart skipped a beat. I stared at him and right when I was going to ask him what he wanted, He started to crouch down and then stand up. He did this over and over. I didn’t know what was going on. I asked, “What? What are you doing?” I watched as he did his calisthenics. My mind was spinning. Then I asked, “What? Do you want me to stand up for you?”
He stopped and stood looking at me. He nodded his head again and mouth three words to me.
I knew what he had said but I wanted to be sure. “Unite your kingdom,” I shouted through the glass.
He nodded for the third time.
I awoke in my bed and sat straight up. I was in the dark and my heart still raced. I didn’t know what to think, it was so real. The longer I sat in the dark the more I told myself it was just a dream. I mean, what would Jesus want with me? I didn’t even really know who he was, and I hadn’t been to church since I was four. My family didn’t even believe in him. I decided, it was just a very vivid dream. Those words, “Unite My kingdom,” echoed in my mind. What did that even mean? I sat there scared in the dark. The only light was the glow from my clock radio. I tuned it on to find some company and to get my mind off the dream. As I dialed through the static, a song came through,
“He is the King of Kings. He is the Lord of Lords. His name is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,”
Then, it went back to static.
I just sat with my hand on the clock radio motionless. I listened to the static for a while waiting for something else to come through, but it didn’t. I kept saying to myself, “That wasn’t a dream. That was not a dream.”
