Every summer we herded down the highway in two cars on our way to New Hampshire for two weeks for sun and swimming. Many times, we took my nieces and nephews to the many amusement parks located throughout the state. One day as we gathered onto a ride, my mother decided to stay behind and rest. The day was hot and tiring. As we pulled away, she waved from a nearby bench on which she sat. I grabbed my camera and snapped her picture. Today when I look at this picture, it seems as though she is waving to me from heaven.
When I was a child, my mother would beautifully decorate our home for Christmas every year. This was a joyous time for my sisters and me. The Christmas tree would be placed in the “sun porch” while the rest of the house held an array of decorations including an electric candle in each window of our nine-room home. One year, after decorating the house, I went outside to see how beautiful it looked. Once again, I had my camera! As I raised it to take a picture, I noticed my mother looking out the window. Walking closer, I pointed the camera in her direction and snapped the picture. I look at this picture each Christmas and think of my mother who is watching over her family still and smiling lovingly at us all.
Days pass, turning into weeks and then months. Before long, years have slipped by without my realizing how swiftly time passes. However, I do realize how much my mother loved each member of her family – her husband, children, parents and siblings. Fond memories of her rekindle my happy childhood days when I did not have a care in the world. My mother cooked. She cleaned. She cared. She loved us with barely a thought for herself. I was blessed to have this warm, loving woman in my life.
A picture of my mother and me, from a time long ago, sits serenely near my computer. Her arm rests gently on my shoulder as her love reaches from the depths of her heart to mine. I will treasure it always; I feel her love more and more with each passing day.
