One particular morning, my wife and I were not so happy with this unpleasant surprise when we discovered that my car had a flat.
Dutifully I changed the tire and drove off to the nearby garage.
While waiting, I struck up a conversation with a man from our neighborhood whose car also had a flat. Suddenly he asked me a strange question, “Do you know anybody who needs a big house”?
Wow, did I know somebody!
Good friends of ours had been looking for years for a real big house, because in their present house a ministry had developed in the form of a museum, which was called “Beit Avraham”.
Our friend, an anthropologist by origin, had traveled extensively through Israel in recent years and collected many artifacts which were related to life and times in the Bible. These were items like a plough, a threshing-board, a millstone, a donkey’s jawbone, knives and tools etc.
He and his wife had built a Bedouin style tent in one of their rooms and displayed all the different articles in such a way that they could explain “daily life in the time of the Bible from Abraham onwards”.
Friends and a growing circle of people who were interested came by to see it and found it often difficult to leave the place afterwards, because the Bible had come alive for them in a surprising new way.
So they had been looking for quite a while for another accommodation in which they could literally enlarge “their tent of Abraham”. Nothing had been found until that particular morning.
I called my friends and gave them the telephone number of this man.
Believe it or not, that same morning our friends went over to see that “big house” and instantly knew that this was the right place for their family and their ministry. It all worked out beautifully.
This is what I like to call the humor of God.
He can take us by surprise. Even a flat tire can work together for good to those who love God!
