Jimmy, Steve and my husband, Roy, were partners in a business. They worked, struggled and dreamed together to create a company strong enough to support three families. To build their dream, the three men met weekly to work on their business plan. One week, the guys decided to invite the wives.
The night started out pretty well. The men were in the living room discussing business while the wives chatted in the kitchen over boiling pots of spaghetti.
“Let’s just ask them.”
“No. That makes it too easy to say no. We’ve got to make them think it’s their idea.”
“What if they don’t want to go? They’re really busy and they might not want to take time out to see a movie tomorrow night.”
“Well, we do. Isn’t that enough?! We have a right to be a part of their lives. I’m tired of being alone every weekend.” My acrid dragon breath was hot and untamed.
The kitchen grew quiet as the guys followed the smell of spaghetti and meatballs up the stairs. Seeing the look on the ladies’ faces gave the guys that, “What’d we do?” feeling and Steve turned to his wife, Joanie, and asked, “What’s up?”
“Nothing.” She said, giving him a kiss, “We’re just working on dinner.”
I fumed at Joanie’s non-committed answer, but kept quiet. Throughout the meal, I couldn’t stop thinking about how the guys spent all of their time together. I wanted my husband back and was determined to start the process that night! My mind was filling up with smoke as I mentally spit fire from man to man. Hateful thoughts swirled around devising ways to make my point so that Roy would have no doubt of my feelings.
Now, Roy is a very gentle person. He rarely complains and saves arguments for times when it’s absolutely necessary. His quiet demeanor is often mistaken for passivism, but he’s strong inside and can defeat dragons with a swish of his sword.
We were sitting on the couch with the other couples enjoying a cup of coffee when I twitched the tail in my dragon heart and began the attack.
“Business, business, business. That’s all you ever talk about. I’m tired of all this wasted time!”
“Honey … let’s talk about this later.”
“No! I want to talk about this right now! You never come home. You’re always late. You spend more time with your friends than you do with me.”
Roy’s silence was thick and could be cut with a knife as my tirade continued. “Pay attention to me! These guys are not going to be here in our old age when you and I have to support one another, so you’d better listen up and listen good. I’m home all day with your children. I was your clothes, your dishes, and clean your bathrooms and I’ve had it! I’m tired of it all!”
“Alright, dear, go wait in the car.”
Grabbing my coat, I stomped out. Victor! I had my say and I forced him to see it my way. Going home was his admission of failure as a husband. “Hah. I knew he couldn’t deny the truth when it was flung in his face!”
More smoke. More tail twitching and fire breathing. More brimstone-tinged thoughts. My gloating filled the air. John joined me as I approached the car. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a glint. Just a small, shiny flash and then it hit me.
I will never forget the swish of his sword as John sat down in the car, looked me in the eye and sternly said, “You embarrassed me.”
The blinding flash of the blade came so quickly that my heart was sliced to the core. Who knew three words could hold such power?
The ride home was quiet. Hot tears fell down my cheeks. I tried, but I couldn’t stop them. I hung my head shamefully as I realized that I was the cause of John’s embarrassment. My hurtful tongue forced my wonderful warrior – the dragon slayer – to use his sword against me.
My life was forever changed the day I realized …I had become a dragon.
