If anyone got to know these girls now, they would find that there was something different about one of them. Holly was just as pretty and outgoing as her two best friends, but what made her different from the others was something that took place over her summer break. She became a Christian. She had told her two closest friends the good news, but they didn’t seem to show much interest at all. She even wondered if they thought this was just a faze she was going through.
It didn’t take long for the “Musketeers” to get into the routine of finding their classes at their new high school. They made sure they signed up for the same classes, and even sat next to each other in their desks. Yep, they were still inseparable! They had lots to catch up on after a three month summer break.
The two girls were gleefully chatting away about the boys they met over the summer as Holly’s mind began to drift back to the night she surrendered her heart to God. It was the best part of her summer. She couldn’t help but smile at the thought; her heart was over flowing with a peace and joy she had never experienced before. Her friends looked at each other and then at Holly. They obviously were bothered at her lack of interest in their stories. They even commented that she had somewhat changed since last school year, but dismissed it and figured it was because they were at a new school with new surroundings.
As the months went by, Holly’s changed life was really showing and her two best friends were noticing. She no longer wanted to gossip about others as they had previously done. And there was no more cheating off of each other’s homework. Holly new there was something going inside of her, and she liked it very much. But it seemed like she was the only one who was glad about the change in her.
Sometime later, her two best friends couldn’t stand it anymore. They had already been snickering about Holly carrying her Bible to school, but the last straw was finally drawn when they were sitting in the lunch room. Holly bowed her head to pray over her lunch, something she had never done before. Her two friends were so embarrassed that they got up and walked away to sit somewhere else. Word was already getting around school that Holly was a Bible Thumper. They didn’t want anyone thinking they were Jesus fanatics too. When Holly lifted her head she saw that her two “best friends” had deserted her.
As she sat there alone in silence, her face flushed red with embarrassment trying to hold back the tears. Suddenly, she heard the Holy Spirit whisper gently to her heart…. A man of too many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. *(Proverbs 18:24) Her heart once again became flooded with that familiar peace she had come to understand. It came from her new best friend.
*(New American Standard Bible—Prov. 18:24)
