I’ve always hated sewing. I could never figure out how to read a pattern. The needle would break. The tension would be wrong. I couldn’t thread the needle. I resigned myself to mending only, even dreading that simple task. The sewing machine was not my friend!
One day a woman from church brought in a fleece blanket that had been knotted around the edges. She proclaimed it easy to make and no sewing was required. This was right up my alley! Who says you need talent to create something beautiful? Encouraged by such simplicity, I immediately enabled the help of someone who had made dozens of them. You just had to cut strips and tie knots around the edges, and you had a beautiful creation!
Thus began my blanket ministry. In a delightful flurry, I began creating these wonderful, warm colorful blankets for anyone going through a difficult time, whether it be sickness, loneliness, divorce, emotional illness, etc. They were also given for happy occasions, such as a birthday, wedding, new baby, or Christmas. The following prayer is attached to every blanket:
I said a prayer for you today and know God must have heard.
I felt the answer in my heart, although He spoke no word.
I didn’t ask for wealth or fame, I knew you wouldn’t mind.
I asked Him to send treasures of a far most lasting kind.
I asked that He be near you at the start of each new day.
To grant you health and blessings and friends to share your way.
I asked for happiness for you in all things great and small.
But it was for His loving care I prayed the most of all.
Many people have claimed enormous comfort from this simple gift. They tell me how warm, soft and cozy the blankets are. What great joy this project has also brought to my life!
These prayers blankets are just like the love of our Savior. When we need His comfort the most, he wraps us in His loving arms and tucks us into a warm, safe cocoon. What a beautiful thing! As a child, when did we feel the most loved? When our parents tucked us under a warm blanket at night, helped us recite our prayers, and kissed us good night. We felt warm, safe and secure. Our Heavenly Father does the same thing today. Before you go to bed, give your troubles to God. He’ll be up all night anyway! And let this comforting verse help you drift off to sleep: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, RSV) Sweet dreams!
