“I just don’t think they’re good enough Sam. The food fare is next Saturday and you heard what Pastor said. There will be church groups from all over the country this year and you can imagine how stiff the competition will be.”
“You know Lu, I’ve been your closest friend for almost four years and in all that time you haven’t been out or even socialized except at church or at work. The problem is not whether your milk tarts are any good it’s with you Lu. You’ve been widowed now for six years, don’t you think it’s time you stepped out a little? You’re still young and attractive, and I know that God has great plans for you; it may be just a milk tart away. What do say hey! At least think about please Lu, please.”
“Okay, okay I’ll give it some thought and prayer but I’m not promising anything,” replied Lulu shaking her head and giving her friend a friendly hug.
Later that night, Lulu thought long and hard about what Sam had said. Maybe Sam was right, maybe it was time for her to start socializing again, meeting new people. How else would she discover God’s plan for her life if she remained fearful?
“Aren’t you glad you decided to give it shot hey Lu?” Sam rambled on excitedly as they worked well into the night preparing the milk tarts for the next day.
“I am Sam, I really am, and thanks for pushing me out of my comfort zone. I really miss Rick but I also know that my life must go on. God does have a purpose and a plan for me, and maybe after tomorrow I’ll know what it is.”
“Wouldn’t it be exciting if you actually met some really nice guy there hey? They say a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and with these milk tarts there is no way a bachelor is going to pass up the opportunity to ask you out,” laughed Sam, as she anxiously slapped the last of the dough into the tin and spread it out. “You must wear that blue outfit we bought the other day. It really brings out your complexion and does so much for your figure, and don’t forget…”
“Samantha, stop now. You’re really getting ahead of yourself again. Let’s stop this ridiculous conversation and concentrate on more important things such as those crusts you’re working with. Remember, I have a reputation to protect,” Lu said playfully as she stirred the finishing touches to the filling of her grandmother’s special recipe.
“Wow! Look at the people here Lu. There has to be at least 50-60 tables already set up and oh! Look there’s Pastor Frank and his wife. Hello! Pastor Frank, over here, its Sam and Lulu. We’re selling Lu’s milk tarts, Pastor Frank,” shouted Sam on the top of her voice.
“Sam!” Lulu scolded, “Stop shouting and help with the table decorations. You’re drawing attention and people are looking,” whispered Lulu already embarrassed and pretending to brush away a strand of her gorgeous auburn hair from her face.
“Attention’s good don’t you think Lu? Now everyone knows where the best milk tarts are and not to worry about marketing, leave it to me, Oh! There’s Joan. Once I let her know where our table is, every one will know,” and with that she ran off shouting Joan’s name and waving her hands in the air like a lunatic.
Two hours later Sam and Lulu were still frantically selling off milk tarts.
“Excuse me ladies, who’s responsible for the delicious milk tart I’m sampling?”
“She is,” Samantha answered pointing all ten fingers at her friend.
“May I introduce myself? My name is Jeff Wilkinson and I have recently moved into town. I bought a bakery on the corner of Swan and Maple Ave, and I was wondering if we may be able to do some business together? Here’s my card, please give me a call,” and with that he stepped back into the crowd and disappeared.
“See, See, I told you didn’t I?” yelled Sam excitedly, “your future was just a milk tart away.”
