TITLE: The Marine and The Hungarian | Previous Challenge Entry

Take a hard core Marine and a stubborn Hungarian and you have the makings of a tug of war. Yet, my parents made it work in a marriage which lasted for 37 years. Dad passed in 1995 at the age of 57.
My Dad worked as many as three jobs at any given time to support his growing family. Within five years they had three children. Mom stayed home with us until my baby brother entered kindergarten. Then to lighten the load for my Dad, she joined the workforce working opposite shifts from Dad. Dad was not happy about her working at all, but I think underneath it all, he loved her deeply for the sacrifice she made for him.
Both of my parents chose to go without so we could have the things we needed. Things back in the 1960’s were much different than they are now. We had food on the table every day and clothes on our backs – in the heat of summer and the cold of winter.
They supplied for all of our physical needs. More importantly, they supplied the closeness of a loving family. We did everything together as a family. We went to church every Sunday. We went hiking in the summer, enjoyed snow ball fights in the winter, played board games, worked on the house, all together.
Through their parenting we all grew up to be productive and driven people. Now we all have children of our own. We no longer live in close proximity with each other, but the bonds formed in our early years are as strong as ever.
When we encounter an opportunity in the raising of our children, we can look back at what worked with us when we got out of line. Of course, Mom is only a phone call away.
Mom still sacrifices for us and her grandchildren. She is always ready with a word of encouragement and she is never at a loss for words when we seem to be taking the wrong road. Mom is the rock of our family and she presents a strength that is surpassed only by the strength of our God.
I know Dad is looking down from heaven and smiling. Oh, did I tell you we knew all the words to the Marine Corps hymn before we cut our first tooth? I love you Mom and Semper Fi Dad. I can’t wait until we are back together again.
