My teachers are infuriated with me. They see my refusal to aim for a high-paid career as a lack of ambition. What sort of a life is a second-rate diploma-not even a degree-followed by years of working in the most impoverished places in the world? Why should a girl who could have almost anything settle for a difficult life? What’s in it for her?
I’ll tell you what’s in it for me. I get to glorify my God, and I get to help the most broken, alone, precious, beautiful children in the world find peace and happiness in Jesus Christ (try explaining that to your school careers advisor when you’re stuck for something to do on a rainy Tuesday: ‘ Well actually, I want to be a missionary’.)
I want to be a nurse. As soon as I have finished my A’s, I’m going to do a year of Bible school. I’m going to go and get the best training as a paediatric nurse that I possibly can. And then I’m going to move to China and use both. I get the two things that I have wanted since I was a wee girl. I get to do what God wants me to (He and I have had long conversations about this, and I know that this is His dream for me), and I get to make sad children happy.
That’s what I get out of it.
