I smiled and snuggled beside her on the couch in front of our living room picture window.
“Daddy has a very special job, Marcy and the police department depends on your dad to be ready to respond to their phone call whenever they need him.” My husband’s job as the senior detective on our city’s police department did have its disadvantages, including being called away from home at all hours of the day and night.
“You see Marcy, daddy’s job with the police department is kind of like yours and mine with God.”
“What do you mean?” she asked. “ Let me see if I can explain it this way. Daddy gets a call from the dispatcher who tells him what little information they have about the situation they need him to respond to. Then, relying on experience and training, your dad goes to where they tell him he is needed and does what he is expected to do. That’s a lot like our job with God.”
“I get it!” said Marcy enthusiastically! “God is the dispatcher and he tells us what he wants us to do and where we should go, right?”
“Right!” I said. “God doesn’t always tell us everything about the place we are supposed to go to or what is going to happen, but He DOES give us the tools we need to go do what He asks us to do. That’s one of the reasons we go to church; to listen and prepare for whatever “phone call” comes and to meet others who can help us do what God might ask us to do someday…it’s like training for the job”.
“O.K., so I guess we are very special workers, too –huh?”
“Yes we are and just like each person at the police department has a very special job to do, God made each of us for our very own special jobs. But it’s not good if we complain when the phone rings and we have a job to do…right?” I hinted.
“I know,” Marcy sighed. “Just wait until Daddy gets home! I’ll tell him that he’s not the only person with an important job around here!”
