“Just go away and leave me alone! You don’t know anything about me. Nobody will miss me - I have nothing or no one to live for anymore. You can’t change my mind. Today is the day I die. I’ve had enough heartache and loneliness and I can’t live like this anymore! Just go so you don‘t have to watch!” she screamed, wild-eyed. As she turned she wavered, losing her balance momentarily.
His heart skipped a beat and he silently prayed; Oh God, please help me save her. Give me the words to say.
God was listening.
Tommy took a deep breath. “You know ma’am, Jesus loves you very much. Now, I’ll admit I don’t know anything about you or your life, but I do know one thing; Jesus loves you. He doesn’t want you to take your life. He came into this world some 2000 years ago so that we might have life, an abundant life. He said that in the Bible. And He knows you. He knows your pain, your circumstance, everything about you and He loves you so very much, ma‘am. He wants you to call on Him. Whatever you are going through, He will get you through it, if you let Him. Did you know that Jesus was destined to die on the cross for all of mankind? Yes ma‘am, that‘s right. John 3:16 says: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Whosoever is you, ma‘am. But you have to believe it, believe in Him” He whispered softly.
Her face was softening as she listened to Officer Tommy's soothing words. He noticed and continued, very tenderly;
“Now, I think that is just about the ultimate expression of love, don‘t you ma‘am? If He loves us that much, don‘t you think he would be absolutely heart-broken if you took your own life before it was His time? I believe He has a plan for each and every one of us. Why, you are so young, maybe He just hasn’t shown you His plan yet. Ma‘am, can I ask you a question? Do you know my Jesus personally?”
Still, she spoke not a word but Tommy could tell the Holy Spirit was there with her, right out on that ledge and the words He had given Tommy were penetrating her heart.
“Well, if not, I can introduce you to Him. But jumping off this building is not the way to meet Him. All you have to do is believe in Him and ask Him to come into your heart and wash you clean, to take your pain upon Himself and He will do it, ma‘am. I promise you that. He will give you a brand new life! Would you like that, ma‘am?“
As tears poured down her face, she nodded.
“OK now, you will have to take my hand and trust me, ma’am. I’m gonna pull you into my arms away from the ledge. Now, are you ready?”
“Yes, I’m ready.”
Tommy grabbed her hand and quickly pulled her into his open arms. They both collapsed on the roof. He led her through the salvation prayer and she accepted Jesus into her life right there on top of that skyscraper.
Afterwards, she told him her name was Alicia and she had lost her husband, her two year old baby boy, and all her earthly possessions in a house fire just two weeks ago. She had nothing left and had decided to end her pain the only way she knew how. Then Jesus sent Officer Tommy to her.
“Thank you, Officer for introducing me to Jesus.”
“All in a day’s work ma’am, all in a day’s work.” he humbly replied.
Thank you Jesus, he breathed a prayer of relief.
