She continued, “I’ve watched Mama do this lots of times, so I know what to do.” On the kitchen table sat a partial container of eggs beside several which had been broken and were in a cup—shells and all. A bottle of milk teetered on piles of flour and sugar that also dusted the tiled floor like a heavy frost. A large bowl held the same ingredients that graced the table top. Bags, once full, now leaned over like wilted flowers.
All he said was, “Molly, where’s your mama?”
“Me and her was takin’ a nap, but I got up ‘cause I wasn’t tired. Before she went to sleep, she said I could bake a cake.”
Dad left the area of devastation to go talk to his wife. In just a minute, he was back, and squatting down face level with his daughter, he said, “Molly, I have it straight from the horse’s mouth that you were not given permission to bake a cake all by yourself.”
“Dad,” she laughed, “don’t be silly. We don’t have a horse, and besides, horses can’t talk.”
Just then Mama came into the kitchen, her sleepy eyes suddenly wide awake. “Molly Marie Michaels, what in the world do you think you’re doing? You know very well I said I’d let you ‘help’ me bake a cake ‘after’ you took a nap.”
“But Mama, I wanted to surprise you,” sobbed the little would-be baker.
Mama picked her up and wiped her tears. “Molly Honey,” she said, “I’m glad you wanted to surprise me, but you’re not quite big enough to make a cake all by yourself. You will be someday, but until then, please no more big surprises like this one. Okay? Now while I clean this up, you go finish your nap. When you wake up, you can ‘help’ me bake a cake.”
After she left the room, Mama looked at Dad. “For referring to me as a horse, you get to help me clean up in here while our Little Martha Stewart takes her nap.”
Dad just grinned and winked. “At least, I didn’t tell her I heard it from an old nag."
