There's a surefire way to receive:
Just sneeze!
A stubbed toe won't do it.
You'll hear, "Watch your step."
A frown will elicit, "Cheer up."
But to hear a "God bless,"
you simply "Achoo."
Only an sneeze will do.
Cough, you'll be offered a soothing drop.
A hanky will follow a tear.
But a sneeze? You're in luck.
In the blink of an eye,
a hearty "God bless you" you'll hear.
Choke, and a Heimlich's forthcoming.
Nod off, "Poor old thing," you (might) hear.
But sneeze, and folks
you don't even know
are blessing you far and near.
What's the origin of this curious thing?
A pope, and bubonic plague!
Gregory his name,
his century the sixth.
He made it the rule of the realm.
And lo and behold, the plague then did wane.
God answered those prayers, my friend.
So, if it is blessing
you seek in your life,
just sneeze, and sneeze.
Amen!
