Scattered across the deep blue sky.
A day of summer at its best,
But with fatigue, I flop, to rest.
Pressures and toil of many days,
Roll forcefully like mighty waves.
Burdensome weights have taken toll,
Too great for one exhausted soul.
Too tired to think, too tired to pray
So simply I call out and say:
‘Lord, send me help, by strength divine,
Give me some token, some small sign:
Immediately the still, calm peace
Is shattered by a flock of geese.
Calling , they honk, and seem to say
‘Keep up the speed, keep on the way,’
In wonder, I view overhead
Their skill, as by one bird they’re led.
Supported by their sister, brother,
Their uplift strength’ning one another.
The first goose then with lessening speed
Drops back and straight away the lead
Is taken by another bird,
Without a single, spoken word.
In unison, their precise ‘V’
With clear-cut streamlined accuracy
Moves on with clear determination
To reach their defined destination.
Then, as they cross the blue blue sky
One sight brings tears into my eye:
A straggling bird, weary, hard-pressed
Drops right away from all the rest.
His isolation from the flock
Is seen and quickly, taking stock,
Two straightway drop to give support
They swoop to help, to aid, comfort.
Oh what created common sense,
Oh what a lesson to the dense!
God lovingly gives us each other
With grace to strengthen one another.
The pressure, toil of many days
Rolls back, I offer words of praise
To God: ‘Your love does never cease,
Thank you for lessons from the geese.’
