Making up for lost time
I missed your early years.
I have some very good memories,
but not enough.
You start your last year
of high school tomorrow.
Soon you’ll be an
independent woman.
You won’t need us.
It breaks my heart. –
I recall sledding only once.
We’ve never played scrabble
or ridden bicycles together.
You’ve never fallen asleep
in my arms.
We’ve gone past Springfield only once.
We’ve never eaten sushi.
There’s a hundred things
we’ve never done.
I miss these things.
Tomorrow will be the
Only
Time in my whole
Entire
life that I’ll get to
send my girl to her
First
day of school.
I know it’s not my fault, but
I wish I could share those
memories with you.
I know I’m not to blame,
but I am truly sorry.
I’m going to hurt
when you move away from home.
I’m going to cry, LeAnn.
I’ll probably scream and cry.
I have already, with these
feelings, you know.
I cried when I first wrote this for you.
So while I have a chance-
while you’re still here with us,
I’m doing what I can…
to make up for lost time.
