I searched for you in the hallelujahs and in the shouting of amen
I searched for you in the worship songs but you alluded me again
I searched for you in the building behind the pulpit of knowledge and truth
I searched for you but once again I found you weren’t there too
I searched for you at conferences among the bible teachers
I searched for you in bible studies and searched for you in preachers
But never did I find you there in the clattering of Sunday obligation
You were in my need – in my quest for you – of silent desperation
When I let go of whom I am – my righteousness and reputation
I found you there on the road to my journey of transformation
You were the homeless man, the hurting wife, the drug addict headed for destruction
At first they were just a rock in my shoe – an inconvenient obstruction
But in my journey to finding you I realized this wasn’t about me at all
For I searched for you in thunder claps and violent torrents of waterfalls
But you were in the still small voice of those longing to be free
And in finding that I realized you were always there beside me
