(featured in the book Low Road to Heaven)
I once felt I had found the bottom
the darkest night one could surmise.
But I had not yet endured the fate
of premature goodbyes.
At God’s request, may Satan test
the anchor of fragile lives?
Heartfelt petitions for my Lord’s sweet mercy,
but no hint of heaven sent replies.
The victim of violent attacks was I,
the object of slander and lies,
neither at its worst could instill the pain
of premature goodbyes.
