A demon so suave and sly
So hard to recognize, and I can’t afford
To miss it, though it looks me in the eye
So make it clear, make it bold
Make it tremendously noted
Make eyes of my heart to behold
That which must be demoted
Wave it in front of my face like a flag
So that I will simply have to face it
Then burn it up like a dirty rag
With testing of fire – erase it!
Let me not hide behind that which is pride,
Though my mind tells me it is not
And set all my heart’s pretensions aside
To relearn what it was I forgot
This pride is deceitful – it lies and it cheats
It clothes itself with worldly phrases
So draw out my focus away from me
And onto Your glory and praises
