Pride’s Punishment
I know this because once you made me
write with chalk one hundred times
I am sorry.
My only thought was how people would read
the board and marvel among themselves,
“Even her expressions of remorse show a streak
of the genius.”
On days I inflate, you tell me
“Sit in your corner on
the Naughty Chair!”
Then you serve me a slice of the pie
of humility. But it’s of no use. I am much
larger than that.
Furthermore, I know even now
you watch me in amazement as I
eat my pie
without the drop of a single crumb
in my lap.
