What I have to be thankful for this Christmas/Thanksgiving Holiday
Jessica walks into the house a little upset with mom cooking dinner.
Mom: So how was your day at school, honey?
Jessica: (throws her bookpack on the kitchen table) Fine, but my teacher gave me a homework assignment that I know I can’t do.
Mom: What assignment is it? Maybe I can help you with it?
Jessica: (sits down at the table) I don’t think so mom.
Mom: Why? You know I made straight A’s all through high school.
Jessica: My English teacher wants us to write a two page paper on what I have to be thankful for this Christmas/Thanksgiving Holiday, and I have nothing to be thankful for.
Mom: ( stops cooking and goes over to Jessica and hugs her) Why you say that? You have a lot to be thankful for.
Jessica: (shrugs her mom from hugging her) No I don’t. All of my friends have boyfriends and here I am without a boyfriend.
Mom: (sits down beside her) So you are saying just because you don’t have a boyfriend you don’t have anything to be thankful for.
Jessica: Yep.
Mom: Well you do have something to thankful for....
Jessica: (looks at her mom) Like what!?
Mom: Like, be thankful that God made you.
Jessica:(looks down) Right now I’m not thanking Him. I don’t think He is on my side. He has done nothing to prove to me that He is on my side.
Mom: (looks at Jessica) I want to ask you something? Where do you think I met your dad?
Jessica: In high school.
Mom: Wrong. I met your dad in college, my sophomore year. I went through my school days without a boyfriend. For along time I thought God wasn’t on my side either. But you know what I learned?
Jessica: (says it like she doesn’t mean it) No. What? That God is on your side?
Mom: (looks at her daughter and puts a hand on her hand) Yep. I also learned that God speared me the hurt that everybody goes through when they break up. He didn’t want me to ever to through that so, He waited till my sophomore year to bring that special somebody into my life. I learned that becasue all of my friends would come to me and cry because they just broke up with their boyfriend or girlfriend , or their boyfriend or girlfriend broke up with them. I knew then that God must love me because He knew I didnn’t want to go through that.
Jessica: (looks at her mom) So you never wanted a boyfriend?
Mom: (looks at her daughter) I didn’t say that. I just said that I’m glad that God waited to show me by future husband when I was ready. I wanted the perfect boyfriend. a boyfriend that all of my friends would be jealous over and I found him in muy sophomore year. So I learned then I did have something to thankful for when Christmas/Thanksgiving comes around. So think real hard about what I said. I know that you can think of something. (they hug)
Jessica: ( Standing in front of her class reading her paper) What I have to be thankful for this Christmas/Thanksgiving Holiday by Jessica Guild. I have so much to be thankful for this Christmas/Thanksgiving Holiday. But if I have to chose one thing to be thankful for is that God loves me so much that He brought me into this world. I know that God is always on my side no matter how bad or how good I am. Because He loves me this much.
