The clouds gathered
The thunder began to sound
The lightening flashed across the sky
The rain fell to the ground
He ran and hid in his secret place
Again, the rage had begun
Fear began to take hold
There was no where else to run
The cursing and screaming
A prelude of what was to come
He knew that she would find him
He began to suck his thumb
This is what he did
When the clouds became so dark
It was a comfort somehow
When he knew she’d find her mark
He could hear her coming up the stairs
Screaming out his name
Saying she would make him pay
It was always the same
Suddenly there was silence
He prayed she went away
Deep inside, he knew better
He knew there was no way
He heard the loud crash
As she kicked in the attic door
She grabbed him by the hair
And slammed him to the floor
She said she wished he’d never been born
That she would stomp him through the floor
He had no idea what he had done
That hurt even more
She dragged him down the stairs
He was begging her to stop
And when they got to the bottom
She let go and let him drop
She raised the belt high
High above her head
Brought it down on his back
As if she wished he was dead
She did this many times
Then she quickly walked away
Leaving him there on the floor
Just like every other day
As a grown man, he thought he had forgiven
This woman that brought such pain
But like the clouds and thunder
Tears still fall like the rain
The thing that keeps him going
Helps him make it through the day
Is God in his Heaven
Who has always shown the way.
