At the foot of the Eiffel Tower
Diamonds outshining the brilliant edifice
Love rarely happens
At the expense of the dragon
Knight swooping in to scoop
The princess from doom to delirium
Love rarely happens, really
In any scenes we see
On the big screen
Yet we live for these
We wait and hope
Almost expect these to be
The truth, our reality
Romantic happenings of love
Love, rather, happens
On a tight budget
Eggs scrambling in a skillet
With toast toasting
Sweat pants and t-shirts
Replace evening gowns and suits
With a dvd and couch instead of
Theatre seating
And candles flicker on the
Card table, because that’s how love happens
Love happens rather
At a distance sometimes
Work, family, school, war
Lovers hold tight to
That inner commitment which
Bonds more tightly than
Feelings or emotions
Phone calls, cards, letters
Contain loving thoughts
Which permeate the mind at sleep
And every moment otherwise
Until a return embrace
Symbolizes the closeness
Shared while apart
Love happening all the while
Love doesn’t just happen
Real lovers happen to love
Purely, honestly, unapologetically
Despite mass media crippling
Our hearts’ ability to perceive
Lovely gestures, love at its finest
Bare, unadorned, smiling with single rose in hand
No Eiffel Tower
No shiny armor
Just one person happening to love
Another
