My son is a teenager who believes he can solve the world's problems if given an opportunity “Mother you are old-fashioned" he often declares. My mother often responded to my outbursts with "you think you know everything but you haven't been far enough around the teacup to find the handle" Those words made me cringe. They were an insult. Who was she to tell me I didn’t know anything about life? I became even more determined to do the things I wanted rather than listen to my mother or consider her advice. If my mother were alive, I would smile and say "You were right I had not been far enough around the teacup to find the handle."
Unlike my mother who spoke those words, my son will never hear them. I merely voice them to myself. One day my son will make similar remarks when arguing with a teenager. Hopefully rather than expressing them he silently whisper them to himself.
Each generation thinks their parents are "old fashioned and out of touch". The cycle goes on and on.
