HARRY THE HIPPO.
Harry Hippo lived with his mom and dad in a beautiful game reserve. He was a happy little hippo and loved playing with the other young animals. His best games were the ones he played with Jumbo and Gumbo the baby elephants. They would roll in the mud then jump into the river, splashing each other with great delight.
Mom and dad Hippo were proud of Harry. They warned him to never go off on his own and to always play where it was safe. Harry usually listened to them, but like all children at times did his own thing!
One day while mom Hippo was busy, Harry got very bored. His friends, Jumbo and Gumbo the baby elephants were nowhere in sight. He started to play in some mud, then noticed Olivia and Rachel the twin butterflies. They flew up to him and began teasing him, flying up to his ears and tickling them with their wings. Olivia would tickle his one ear and Rachel the other.
“STOP IT YOU SILLY BUTTERFLIES. WAIT ‘TIL I CATCH YOU” Shouted Harry.
“You’ll never catch us,” they replied laughing at him.
Around and around they played, Harry racing here and there after them. He was not being careful and they were going further and further away from his home. Soon they all got tired of the game and Harry turned around to go home.
Oh dear me, he didn’t know where he was.
HE WAS LOST!
He walked this way looking for the path and that way and found nothing!
It began to cloud over and a storm was in the air. Lightning flashed across the sky and it got darker and darker.
BOOM BOOM CRASH BANG FLASH FLASH.
The thunder and lightning crashed and flashed across the sky.
SPLISH SPLASH BIG RAINDROPS FELL ON HARRY’S HEAD.
POOR HARRY WAS TERRIFIED!
Looking all around him he began to cry.
“MUMMY WHERE ARE YOU? PLEASE HELP ME.” He screamed.
He then noticed some bushes with a hole underneath them. Crying loudly he crept under the bushes. There he felt a bit safer.
“Please let somebody help me” he whispered sadly.
Meanwhile mom and dad Hippo were going crazy. They were calling and calling but no sign of Harry.
“HARRY WHERE ARE YOU?” They shouted as they searched around the bushes.
The elephants and the giraffes all came to help them look.
“HARRY HARRY” They all called loudly, with the giraffes stretching their necks looking here and there.
But there was no sign of Harry!
Jack the Lion, who had been fast asleep in his den, had been awakened by Harry’s wailing.
“WHAT IS GOING ON?” He roared loudly.
After all he was the king of all the animals and he didn’t like them to be unhappy. Stretching as he got up, he wandered towards the sound of Harry’s crying.
“WHERE ARE YOU?” He roared.
“Here in the bushes and I am lost.” Harry cried.
“Come out and let me help you.”
“I am scared of the thunder.”
“Don’t be silly. I am here and will protect you.” Jack said kindly.
Harry crept out of his hole and began to walk towards Jack.
“Do you know where I live?” he asked sadly.
“Of course I do! I am the king of all the animals and know everything.” Jack told him proudly.
“WOW THAT IS WONDERFUL!”
“Follow me” Jack said.
Jack led the way with Harry close behind him.
Soon they came to the river, where Harry’s parents and friends were all gathered. Mom Hippo was crying loudly while her friends tried to comfort her
Suddenly Dad Hippo noticed Jack with Harry behind him!
“HARRY WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?” Dad Hippo shouted.
All the animals ran towards Jack and Harry.
Harry ran to his mother and father and hugged them while tears of happiness fell down his face.
“Thank you so very much Jack” Dad Hippo said.
“My pleasure, just be more careful with him.”
Harry turned around and gave Jack a big smile as he thanked him again.
“HOORAY FOR JACK” SHOUTED ALL THE ANIMALS.
Jack gave them all a final wave and walked proudly back to his den. All was well in his kingdom and he could now go back to sleep!
