Chapter 12
Architect Supreme
As a child, I understood that all material things seemed to progress toward disintegration, and therefore must have had a beginning. Although I could not explain the sun, I knew its warmth and light were very real. I later understood that the universe was certainly not eternal, and would end one day. I, therefore, concluded that it must have had a cause.
In the midst of my fascination, I recall my mother playing Chopin on the black upright piano at home. At the age of seven, she placed my sister and me beside her on the black mahogany stool and tried to teach us to play. I found it dull and uninteresting! I was only interested then in building things with my hands, and inventing new and more effective ways of doing things.
At the age of twelve, pop music, being simpler and easier to sing, enticed me, but a classical concert with my mother never excited me!
One night after a classical concert with her, I wondered about the importance of simple human emotions and the exaggerated flamboyancy of the concert pianist. Puzzled, I asked myself, Why did the pianist throw up his hands, sway back and forth and dress in black coat tails? Classical music was complicated and long, and everyone coughed at the same time between major sections of the music.
Later, I turned to art, and created a cartoon of talking ants. Shortly afterwards, my mother took me to the office of Jamaica's daily newspaper, “The Gleaner” on North Street in Kingston. There I met the editor of the Children's Own, who published an article entitled Richard loves to draw. That thrust me into the world of publishing right away. When I was ten, the newspaper published my first two poems. Why was I so creative and artistic at that early age? Did some intelligent mind place those instincts in me for a definite purpose?
Considering the arrangement of hunting skills, limbs of men and animals, emotions and instincts, how could so many details occur by happy accidents over millions of years. I could not help asking, Was someone bigger always watching and up to something?
Gradually, I became aware of the first law of a well defined scientific method, namely, that of 'contingency.' That means that designed things show no evidence of evolving automatically from an unintelligent process (e.g. Darwin theory of evolution). I soon came to believe in the existence of a Supreme, Almighty, all-wise God, and began to see things the other way: Big, amazing universe! Dynamic structure of living things, including the intricacy of the human body! Big, amazing God! Certainly, God was the greatest intellect in the universe, Who created intelligent design everywhere!
Slowly I began to realize that my own interests and memories faded away, and that only He survived, Ever-Living God of all!
Albert Einstein, the world-renowned scientist, once propounded a theory of relativity, namely, that the universe was constantly expanding. However, he soon realized that this meant that it definitely had a beginning, and therefore an Originator. Frustrated, he invented another theory called “a cosmological constant.” This meant that the universe was not expanding but remained constant all the time. However, other scientists eventually convinced him that the universe was definitely expanding. He later called his original theory “the greatest mistake of his career!” and came to accept that a superior intelligence was responsible for the existence of the universe, though he never referred to Him as the God of the Bible. (See note at the bottom of this page)
Facts stare us in the face! Evolutionists admit that there is no evidence, no observable proven case of a new species ever coming into existence. Darwin himself is reported to have stated, “In spite of all efforts of trained observers, not one change of species into another is on record!”
As for me, I acknowledged that there had to be an architect. He would have had to be timeless and eternal. Of necessity, He could not have been bound by the same laws of nature as human beings, but above and beyond them. He is not made of material substance, since He transcends space. He is obviously unbelievably powerful and wise beyond our wildest imaginations. With so many endless design choices involved in the creation, He is therefore not inanimate or impersonal. I concluded that He has all the aspects of a personal being, Who is great, magnificent, and Wonderful to have made such intelligent choices.
Beyond the depths of music, the skills of writing, the magnificence of the created universe, God seems to have been calling and drawing me by His magnetic and awesome presence.
One writer has declared that this Supreme Being has left His signature throughout creation.
Paul, the greatest apostle of the Christian faith, declared that God's invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead!
David, the psalmist once wrote, “For You, Lord, are most high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods!” This exalted God of the universe dwells outside of space and time; He is “the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity.” The Hebrew term 'El Olam' describes Him as the One Who extends beyond our furthest vision, whether backward or forward, until lost to sight. He is the God of Eternity.
Who would have thought that the Eternal God of the universe would get to me through the art of music, and eventually through the natural creation, which bears His unmistakable signature?
What can we give unto Him who is so great that our natural minds cannot comprehend His greatness? He is worthy of all praise and adoration!
Note on Einstein
In George Gamow's autobiography, My World Line (1970), he says of Einstein:"Much later, when I was discussing cosmological problems with Einstein, he remarked that the introduction of the cosmological term was the biggest blunder of his life."
