Fantasy football has become the big thing now, and I bet many of you are either involved in fantasy football or know someone who has a fantasy football team. I wondered one day as my husband headed off to draft his players for the upcoming season, “How does he know who to pick for his team?” Well, if you could see my husband on most Sundays, you would see him on the couch watching football ALL day. He studies those players, and he knows who is going to pull through for their team. He is banking on the history of those players, and what he has seen from them in the past. The faithfulness of those players fuels his faith for them.
That statement can also be true for us in our walk of faith. God’s faithfulness fuels my faith. Knowing what God has, done, who God is, and how he has cared for me in the past, is what helps me to have faith in the darkest and scariest situations.
The Bible outlines God’s faithfulness from cover to cover, we have read and heard story after story about God’s faithfulness, we sing songs about God’s faithfulness, and if we continue to recount His faithful deeds, it will dramatically change how we walk in faith from day to day.
My husband and I have recently struggled with financial hardships after having to pay hefty medical bills accumulated by our baby’s stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit followed by a separate stay at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. One day as we discussed our current financial standing, in hope and desperation I said, “Let’s watch and see what He is going to do.” We put our faith in God, knowing who He is, Jehovah-Jireh, which means God will provide. We believed God at His word and proclaimed His promise to “supply all our needs from His glorious riches.” (Philippians 4:19 NLT)
In that moment God used a story from my past to fuel my faith for our current situation. I was a child of divorce and I remember a time when I was about fifteen years old. My mom was raising two teenagers and a five year old and was struggling financially, living pay check to pay check. She was down to her last few dollars for the week and had no idea how she was going to manage to put gas in her car to get to work or how she would put food on the table the next few nights. We came home from school one afternoon to find a large box sitting on top of our mail box. We opened it up and inside were a blanket with a scripture embroidered on it and a $100 bill inside an envelope. Inside the envelope was also a letter stating that this was a gift from the Lord, and we need not try to figure out who it came from.
As I shared that story with my husband our faith grew bigger and we knew that our never-changing God was fully capable of providing for us in the same way. The next day we received a phone call from our baby’s doctor informing us of some financial assistance that was available to us. A few days later we found out that one of our medical bills was going to be much smaller than we had anticipated. Over the next few weeks we sat back and watched God take care of our situation and provide all we needed out of His abundance.
God is able, He is powerful, and He is faithful. Proclaim it! Great is His faithfulness.
It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning and your faithfulness in the evening. Psalm 92:2(NLT)
