Have you ever written an allegory? Read one that really grabbed you?
Well, today is a good day to ponder allegories, as the author of arguably the most well-known one was born 384 years ago today.
Yes, the writer and preacher Paul Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress, was born on November 28, 1628 in Bedfordshire, England. His best-known work is regarded as one of the most significant works of English literature, has been translated into over 200 languages, and has never been out of print.
Whether they have read it or not, many are at least vaguely familiar with the protagonist Christian and his journey from “the City of Destruction” to “the Celestial City.” It was written, most scholars believe, while Bunyan was in prison for holding religious services outside the auspices of the Church of England. Protestant missionaries, historically, have translated this book first after the Bible.
Of course, it is not the only Christian allegory written, but it is a powerful book, and one that has had a profound impact. So, happy birthday, John Bunyan. And go read your favorite allegory (or write one)!

I was thinking “Hinds Feet on High Places” as I read through your post, then saw that you beat me to it. Write on. It is the book that first gave me the desire to write. The imagery is stupendous and its message is so relevant for every Christian soul. I must give an allegory a go.
