THE CROWN OF THORNS
May I share some thoughts with you?
First of all, let me make sure you understand that I am not a Biblical scholar, but I have been meditating on the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus.
I have thought many times about the Crown of thorns. I don't remember a lot of sermons preached on this one topic so I have no teacher, preacher to refer to. Just my thoughts.
Webster' dictionary definition is to irritate and cause distress. Vines expository of New Testament Words tells of a growth of thorny vines, abundant in the area of Jerusalem and that the soldiers plaited the vines and placed it on Jesus' head in mockery. I am sure most, if not all of us know this. The question that comes to me is 'why' from the spiritual standpoint. He took the stripes on his back for our healing, so is it possible that the thorns piercing his scalp could also represent our healing from the 'fiery darts of the wicked one?" The thoughts the devil throws at us daily is certainly something we are all aware of and have to deal with. Those thoughts can and do cause distress and irritation. Just look around you at what is happening on the world scene. People are committing suicide because they lost their job, their home, their life style...this is certainly not God's plan.
Back to the subject: Perhaps we should all meditate more about what actually happened that day when Jesus was crucified. You have heard some say Jesus was a weak man. He endured 39 lashes on his back with a whip that had tassels with sharp pieces of metal on the ends and with each lash it tore his flesh (and we holler 'ouch' with a paper cut). Most men would have fallen unconscious but not JESUS. He was a strong man. He allowed the people to spit on him, lay him on a wooden cross and place those railroad spike nails in his hands and feet. It had to be incredibly painful. My thoughts: Nails in his hands: "whatever your hands find to do, do it to the glory of God"...Nails in his feet: "this is the way, walk ye in it". The piercing of his side: I am still meditating on that.
All this was done publicly, nothing hidden; Jesus was hanging on that tree naked. Artist always use a loincloth, but was not the case at the time. Once he released his spirit to the Father, his body died. You know the story of Him being taken down from the cross, washed body and wrapped, placed in a tomb.
