Christian Living
We spend up to 70% of our lives in the workplace. Regardless of an individual’s religious background – even if they have no religion at all - there we are, all lumped together, expected to get along and pull in the same direction for the good of the company. Without fail, employees will find themselves dealing with the stuff of life: death, sickness, addictions, divorce, kids on drugs, broken hearts, cheating spouses, pregnant daughters, etc.
Many of those punching the clock today are stressed beyond belief. In fact, they’re walking powder kegs. Many have just lost their jobs and others are on the verge of losing their homes.
As of 4:30 today, I have heard that the Binghamton, NY shooter was an ex-Employee at IBM. Regardless of where he worked, we DO know that he was NOT working when he barricaded the back door to the immigration office there in New York and walked in the front door and started firing. Now, 14 people are confirmed dead, including the shooter, who took his own life, and 4 others are in critical condition and families are forever changed..
I STRONGLY contend that murders such as today’s in New York or the Nursing Home murders last week in North Carolina – or ANY massacre – stand a better-than-good chance of being averted IF ONLY we would allow Workplace Chaplains in the doors to help them.
I am blessed to have been invited into workplaces all over Texas from Paris to Hillsboro, Baird to Tyler and many places in between. At the same time, it’s not uncommon to hear from other businesses that they’ve decided AGAINST allowing me in for fear of being sued. In fact, just last week, during a phone interview, an Administrative individual I was speaking with inquired, “Let’s say I’m an atheist…who do I sue, you or do you work for some organization?”
See the mindset? I get this all the time. People have been so deceived by the “Church ‘n State” lie. The phrase “In God We Trust” is good enough to be printed on our money but we won’t entrust our businesses to Him?
This makes no sense!
What if these murderers – these troubled souls – had been given the opportunity to speak with a clergyman as part of that company’s Conflict Resolution procedures? In Michigan, every 6 seconds a person is losing their job these days. Imagine that! Speaking of Michigan, a University of Michigan survey from years ago revealed that most people would STILL prefer speaking with a clergyman rather than a psychologist or therapist.
Give them what they want, people!
Business owners, use your heads!
Quit fearing the lion that MAY be outside the gate and do something that will actually help people BESIDES trading money for time. Your business is simply more important than that, isn’t it?
Employees, put pressure on Management! Title VII allows you to express your faith in the workplace. Don’t allow fear to be your motivator!
Folks, I’m NOT talking about “getting Religion.” God forbid! Many people have nothing but negative concepts of Religion every time they hear the word. No, Religion is NOT the answer. A Relationship with the Creator IS!
BIG difference!
A young lady E-Mailed me two nights ago. I had spoken to the day shift at a nursing home two weeks earlier at an In-Service meeting, her first day of employment there. She writes: “Ever since you came I can't get the thought out of my head about how much I really need to become more in touch with the Lord. I need my children to know him and for him to be part of my life. All growing up I never went to church and I am 24 now and still never really have been religious. But something has been pulling at my heart since that Friday. There is so much on my plate right now and I don't even know where to start. I know everyone always says I can talk to God but for some reason I just haven't committed myself to him yet… I am just not really sure how. I don't know anything that he has said because I honestly have never read the word of God. But maybe through some miracle you can help me.”
We spoke late Wednesday night. Her husband was on the phone, too. We prayed together and they are doing GREAT. They were VERY encouraged.
Even if an Employee won’t speak to a Workplace Chaplain, I believe that praying for the facility itself can make a HUGE difference. I have testimonies to that effect as well. It’s like setting the thermostat!
Think about it, folks. We booted God out of our schools, the courthouse, the Federal Government. As a friend of mine says, “The Workplace is the final Frontier.”
I’m beginning to believe him.
Every blessing,
Michael Tummillo
Workplace Chaplain
