As I walked past my kitchen window, the snow falling outside caught my eye. I had known it was snowing, but the size of some of the flakes coming down was what attracted my attention – it was as if there were small saucers of white china floating down from the sky…and it was quite a sight. As I pushed deeper into the broad windowsill to get a closer look, I was quickly reminded of how many other events had been seen through this window. Since I now live in the house where I grew up, I have many memories to draw upon.
Looking through this particular piece of glass, I have the best view out of the kitchen. From it you can tell a lot of what’s happening out in the real world, and many scenes flashed by my mind’s eye. As I watched cars creep down the hilly piece of road just past our driveway this snowy day, I could easily remember my mother and I standing at this same window during snowstorms, wide-eyed as we saw cars slowly slide off the road and get stuck in the nearby ditch, or even worse, miss the curve all together and plow into my dad’s well-positioned fence. It usually had to be repaired at least once a season.
As I was growing up, many a phone conversation had been talked through while staring out this window. Back in the days when the only thing portable about your phone was how far the cord would reach, our yellow wall phone was perched next to this window and it was easy to rest your elbows on the deep windowsill and enjoy the view while you talked to whomever was on the other end of the line. As I’ve just sent my own daughter off to college at my alma mater, I thought of the many phone calls my mom and I shared when I was the young freshman calling home, and realized most times her wisdom and advice to me came as she was looking out this window at the same scenery I see today.
By far one of its most important jobs in its history is that this is the window you watch from to see who’s getting off the bus at the end of the driveway after a long day at school. From this vantage point, my mother used to watch my brother, my sister and, years later, me trudge across the lawn from the school bus to the house . I’m only too happy to say that now I’ve watched each of my three children do the exact same thing.
On a cold, clear winter night, you can watch the moon rising through the trees right out this window. Something catches your eye through the black of the naked tree limbs against the sky, and all of a sudden you realize that through this kitchen window, you are seeing a planet that lives hundreds of miles away in outer space. Its familiarity only lends to make it a beautiful scene, as you marvel at how big and bright it is, and how visible, right there through a square of glass that happens to line up perfectly with its orbit this time of year.
Yes, there have certainly been a lot of scenes that have taken place, come and gone, and been witnessed from this spot in the house. But I like that. There’s comfort in looking out my kitchen window. It’s good to know I share a piece of history with the loved ones that have gone before me here. It’s nice to know I’m looking at the same trees, the same grass, and the same lay of the land as my parents and siblings did before me.
Some things never change, it’s been said. There’s nothing as constant as change, I’ve also heard. But the one I like best is “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. I know it to be true. After all, I’ve got proof – I’ve got my kitchen window.
