Spending lots of money on your teen's designer clothes, new bikes and dates? Your teen asks to borrow twenty dollars for this date, fifty for that shirt, hundreds for that bike, but you never see a nickle of that money again. All those dollars add up and soon you are stretching to make ends meet.
Why not teach your teen to earn the money himself? Here are nine steps to help you do just that:
1. Sit down with your teen. Make a list of his skills. Talk about your expectations and requirements.
2. Discuss his choices. Remember to consider his availability and transportation needs.
3. Explore creative options. If he wants to be a chef, maybe he can work at a local restaurant. Or if he wants to be a reporter, he call the local newspapers and radio stations to see if any go-fer positions are open.
4. Assist him in creating a resume. If this is his first job, include academic, extracurricular activities, awards won, honors, relevent skills and interests.
5. Hone your teen's interview skills by role-playing with him. Pretend to be the interviewer and coach him on what to say in response to questions that an interviewer might pose.
6. Prepare a list of possible contacts, including yours and your teen's.
7. Study the want ads in the newspaper together. Write down the phone numbers of the ones that your teen may qualify for. Encourage your teen to call for more information.
8. Also check with neighbors for lawn-care, babysitting, hauling or painting opportunities.
9. If your teen has applied for a job and hasn't heard within a week, encourage him to make a follow-up call to the company.
The most important skills your teen will learn is how to apply for a job, conduct himself in an interview and earn money on his own. With his first paycheck, he will feel a sense of accomplishment. And you will feel less strain on your wallet.
