Christian Living
It could have been me with no shoes on my feet
Living and eating off of the streets.
It could have been me with no clothes on my back
Living in poverty and in lack
Of the necessities of life
Battling daily with misery and strife.
It could have been me with no home
Spending my days and nights alone
With no one to love or to share
Their love, and no one to care
About the life that I live;
Or anyone with an encouraging word to give
To me in my times of sorrow
And to speak hope into my tomorrow.
It could have been me that lost a father or mother
Or the one facing the pain of losing a sister or brother.
It could have been me with a destructive addition
Or with a deadly affliction.
It could have been me in a prison cell
Or locked up in a lonely jail.
It could have been me with no food to eat
Or sitting in a home with no lights or heat.
It could have been me with a child gone astray,
Or a child I don't know where he is from day-to-day.
Yes, it could have been me in any situation,
Adultery, stealing, murder, lying and fornication;
But, God saw fit to save me from these things
And from the hurt, sorrow and misery they bring.
It's because of God's sufficient grace
That I'm able to faithfully run this Christian race
In spite of the many trials and troubles I go through
And in spite of the wrong I sometimes do.
I praise God for saving me from a life
Filled with so much misery and strife.
I thank Him, but I must take this time to request
That He shows mercy on the rest
Of those who are less fortunate than I;
Those spending many days and nights having to cry
Because of the burdens they're having to bear
And the many sorrows they have to share.
Lord, bless me so that I may bless just one,
Helping to make his race a little easier to run.
I don't have much, but all that You've given me,
Help me to share it wholehearted and freely
With those who don't have anything to call their own
And those who may have never known
The gift of giving hope, joy and peace
To someone who faces sorrow that never seems to cease.
For, Lord, I realize that it could have been me;
But, You are the one who set me free
From a life of so much sorrow and pain
And gave me feelings of joy and peace I can't explain.
