Prayers
As I was getting ready to write this article, I must confess that I was pretty nervous. There are so many points on prayer to discuss that I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. The more I read, the more nervous I got that I wasn’t praying right. Was I praising God enough, was I doing it at the right time of day, was I doing it long enough, was I praying to long? The more I thought of it, the more overwhelming it became. I now know this is far from what God intended our prayer life to be.
God truly wants our prayer life to be a time of fellowship with Him, a time where we can come before Him and speak from the heart. God cares about all aspects of our life and always wants to know what we’re dealing with. I know what you’re thinking: “But God is God. He already knows everything. Why do I have to tell Him what He already knows?” Quite simply because God wants to hear it from you. He wants to know that you trust Him enough to talk to Him about your most inner feelings, that you trust Him with your heart. And most importantly, He wants you to stop and listen to His voice.
But the thought lingered: “How do I know that I’m doing it right? How do I know that I’m using the right words?” I can tell you that when I pray, I want to know that what I’m saying is right. I want my words to come out in a way that God will be moved by them. I want my prayers to be perfect!
There lies the problem, how can my prayers be perfect if they come from me, someone who’s imperfect? No matter how hard I try, I will never be perfect. So what do I do? God provided the answer…Jesus, our intercessor. Hebrews 7:25 states: “Therefore He [Jesus] is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him [Jesus], since He [Jesus] always lives to make intercession for them [you and me].”
What does this mean? It means that Jesus Christ stands in the gap that exists between God and us. It means that even though we are not perfect, Jesus is right there standing in the middle with one hand on you and one hand on God bringing us together. This means that when God hears our prayers, they are completely perfect coming for a perfect person because Jesus has cleaned-up and perfected our prayer. I don’t know about you but this has brought such a relief into my heart, knowing that Jesus is there between God and me intercepting my prayers and perfecting them so that when they reach God’s ears, they are perfect!
This truth has set me free in my prayer life! It has given me the ability to pray from my heart with confidence knowing that Jesus stands before God and I and perfects my prayers. I pray that this simple truth impacts your prayer life as it did mine and you can come bodily before God knowing that Jesus lives to make intercession for us.
