"If I were hungry, I would not tell you;for the world and all that is in it is mine."Psalms 50:12
Can I really owe God? Does God really need my tithe? Can He do without it? I know He can.
One time, God showed me that He did not need my money but my obedience and love for Him. I had been faithfully tithing but on one particular month, I decided not to. I planned to pay it the following month but for the next six months, I was unable to even though I desperately tried . The money was simply not there and my finances got in to a mess.
In each of the months that followed, I kept thinking that I would recover and pay it all but by the fifth month, the debt was too huge and I was stressed. I had made an entry in my diary known as God’s debt and had given it a time frame, which I kept changing as things, got worse. I kept promising God that I would pay up but I was unable. It started interfering with my prayer life. I was not at ease before God. I started asking God to provide money to pay the debt, which I owed Him. How interesting that I could go to my Debtor to ask Him to give me money to pay Him back. This principle does not work in the natural. To my greatest shock, I realized I would never be able to repay the debt unless I took out some loan or I received some huge bonus from my job, which was unlikely then.
One day, I shared with my prayer partner the burden of how I owed God so much and the discomfort it was causing me. She looked at me straight in the eye and with a gentle smile she said,
"My dear you cannot owe God, He is too big and owns everything, quit the race, confess your sin and ask Him to give you a fresh account to pay your tithe."
Suddenly, I felt a release in my spirit as if something heavy had been lifted away. I received a new revelation. I came face to face with the awesome power of a Great God; the Greatest Giver of all times. The Majestic God who owns everything in heaven and on earth. I knew God was confirming what she had just said. God owns everything. We can never owe Him and any efforts will only make us miserable like I was.
Later on, I reflected on the issue and saw that God did not need my money and He cannot put on hold the expansion of His kingdom due to my disobedience. I confessed my sin and God gave me peace to begin afresh. He wants and will bless our obedience and will meet all our needs. Glory to God.
