THE WORKS OF JESUS PROVE THAT HE IS THE CHRIST
The Jewish leaders were not in agreement about Jesus’ identity. They gathered around him and demanded that he tell them plainly whether or not he was the Christ.
Jesus said, “I told you already that I am he, but you didn’t believe me. The works
that I do in my Father’s name are proof of who I am. You don’t believe me because you aren’t my followers. I know them, and they listen to me, and do what I teach them to do.
“I give them eternal life. They will never be utterly destroyed or removed from my grasp. My Father, who is greater than all, gave them to me. No one can take them out of His grasp. My Father and I are united as One.”
The Jewish leaders didn’t understand, and Jesus’ statement of unity with God the Father made them angry. They thought he was elevating himself to equality with God. So they picked up rocks to throw at Jesus.
Jesus said, “I have showed you many good works that my Father does. Which of them is the reason you want to kill me?”
They replied that it was not because of good things Jesus had done in the Father’s name. It was because that he, a man, seemed to be saying he was equal with God.
The scriptures say that God the Father has called us gods, which means that we are made like God in image and character. Jesus said that God the Father had sanctified him, or set him apart and sent him to the world.
“If I am not doing the works of the Father,” Jesus said, “don’t believe me. But if I do, even if you can’t believe me, believe the works that you see. You can know and believe that the Father and I are united as One.”

• Their unity provides the strength to keep believers.
• You can know and believe that God the Father and Jesus are united as One.
