Short Stories
As an attorney Taylor Engelhopper fell far short of any desirable mark of success. He had never won a case in court and nobody ever came to his office to seek help. Mounting business debt had ruined his once spotless credit resulting in the foreclosure of his home mortgage loan. He had been reduced to buying cheap online car insurance even though he knew it would never pay a dime on a real claim. No, it could never be denied. Taylor Engelhopper fell short in a lot of areas.
Taylor never worried about his shortcomings, though. He had something which more than made up for what he lacked. Taylor Engelhopper had a twin brother, Tylor Engelhopper.
Tylor Engelhopper was the opposite of his brother Taylor. Tylor made a fortune selling fashion wedding jewelry made out of braided dog hair and then went into the computer industry by developing Spyware for Dating Software. He also discovered how to remain cancer free by eating the pages of a weight loss diet health book. Yes, Tylor was nothing like Taylor…
Except at New Year’s.
Every year both Taylor and Tylor would meet at Tylor’s house (since he always had a house, unlike Taylor) and they would formulate New Year’s Resolutions. They would come up with some great ones. Vows were made to change the world, change their girl friend’s, change their political affiliations… they were ready to change anything and everything that was a current handicap in their lives. This was a good habit, this New Year’s Resolutionizing. They both enjoyed it and they both had full intentions of living up to their new found goals. It was strange watching them at New Years because Tylor had so few things needing change and Taylor had so much. Both brothers, though, refused to let the other come up with a better resolution than their own.
Over the years things changed. It’s a mystery to this day, but Taylor started becoming successful and Tylor lost all he once had owned. Fortune hunters tried all they could to discover what had made the difference and Tylor was right there with them. What had happened? It remained a mystery until finally Taylor died and Tylor got back his fortune through inheritance.
Among the things in Taylor’s mansion was his diary. In his diary was only one entry for each year. Each entry recorded that year’s resolutions, but not his own. All that was recorded in the diary was the resolutions his brother had made… and not kept.
But Taylor did.
