Encouragement
It is easy to trust God when there are no aches and pains in our bodies and when there is tangible assurance that life will go on as is for a reasonable amount of time to come. it is easy to trust Him when we can hold loved ones in our arms and laugh with them and when we have a reason to believe that thus it will be for long years to come; when we are able to pay the bills and there are no bill collectors reminding us that we aren't quite cutting it as a small portion of the human race...
And then one day the breath is knocked out of our souls by some turn of events. Perhaps it is that suddenly we find ourselves sitting in a waiting room in a hospital having to drink cups of some unknown liquid that will allow a diagnostic machine to better see how frail and temporary indeed our mortal bodies truly are. Perhaps we are faced suddenly with the shock and horror of having to look down upon the silent face of a spouse or child who God chose to call home to Heaven, despite the loneliness and fear and confusion we are left behind with. Perhaps all possessions are lost at once...money, home...all physical securities are gone and we are left standing and crying out to the God we thought was love and compassion and forgiveness.
The night of our lives comes and we are left asking "why?" and "how?" And perhaps we are met with silence and we wonder, where is God? Nights of flowing tears and utter darkness follow, and we pray, "Where are you?" "Can you hear me?" Friends and family call to encourage, prayer requests are passed around, and Bible verses suggested for reading...but the Bible stays on the shelf and grief gives way to despair.
Then, one night our eyes open and we look about in the darkness and, through stinging eyes a shaking hand, we reach for the familiar soft, cool leather and, gently we open God's Word and the healing begins.
From the passion of birth to the trauma of death, life is an uphill struggle all the way. While it is natural for us as humans to lean toward the inclination to assume that because God is a God of love, there surely should never be hardships or sorrows. But the Word of God tells us something very different; it tells us that God does not promise us that such struggles and sadnesses will not befall us; in fact, it tells us that, especially as believers, we will face a multitude of trials and tribulations and, while God has not promised a life of continual bliss, we are promised that God has a divine plan and purpose for everything that befalls us and, most importantly, that He will be with us in the midst of whatever might happen.
But would a God of unfailing love really allow such things? Yes, He does because of that great and unfailing love. If there were no need for us to draw closer to Him because of worry and fear and loss, we would not grow as Christians and there would be no testimonies of spiritual deliverance to pass on to others, which would in turn bring fellow Christians closer to His side and unbelievers to the Cross.
Perhaps, while it is hard to understand God's timing and reasoning, it could be enough to simply know that, while we cannot know why, God does. The Bible tells us that even as He is trying our souls, He is loving us best and, that He will never give us more than we can bear.
