Loneliness creeps up on us like a slow marching snail. It takes its time to arrive and lingers for what seems like an eternity. This slow march is most noticeable when negative feelings are compounded with lack of confidence. At those times, even the formation of a smile requires a lot of effort.
I awoke on one of those lonely mornings, and was just lying there with a blank feeling. Grave lethargy engulfed my body as I contemplated the fact that it was supposed to be another busy day. The prospects of cooking and having another meal alone were quite daunting.
The short distance to my computer seemed like a mile as I ambled to it and booted it up. The Holy Spirit then gave me specific instructions. I heard 'read Psalm 18 verse 5 to 9 and Psalm 91 verse 2 and see if you can find the connection.'
Curiosity overtook me and I frantically clicked to find Psalm 18 verse 5. It was somewhat familiar but I needed to get new revelation from it. It read:
"The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth. There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind."
Knowledge/understanding and insight hit me like a flash of lightning. David cried to God and God wanted me to cry to him. When I did, He would fight my battles himself. He just wanted me to cry to Him and acknowledge that I needed Him in my time of need/trouble/loneliness.
Psalm 91 verse 2 was now beckoning me with all its might. When I began to read it, it was like double confirmation of God's amazing grace and mighty power. I began to read and the realization of the repetiton of the same message was astounding. It began, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence."
God's deliverance, mercy, power and majesty are all clearly defined and described in these passages. These readings gave me renewed energy and impetus to face another day in the knowledge that when God is ready He will give people for my life.
In His time, he will slay the giants of loneliness and self-doubt and anoint me afresh.
If you listen quite intently, God will tell you what to read and enlighten your understanding to find the links of reassurance in His word.
