With a beaming smile the excited girl clutched the special envelope close and slipped outside the house into the cool evening air for a moment by herself. A letter! From one of her three closest friends (all who were living nearly 2000 miles away)! Her joy could hardly be contained within her leaping heart over this simple old-fashioned letter.
But this wasn’t just any letter. On the front and the back were two different pictures of the four friends; these the creative young sender had printed and laminated to the envelope with large pieces of packaging tape. The bulging contents of the envelope contained a fat letter, and, inside, as she unfolded the thick pages, she found them holding a thin, coiled piece of outdoor climbing rope, braided in blue, green and gray.
Grinning with immense delight and curiousity, she began reading the typed letter from her dear friend.
“We purchased this rope with the intention of making bracelets for all of us. But after sleeping on the idea, I began thinking about the similarities between rope and friendships in Christ.
So rope is a length of fibers, twisted or braided together to improve strength for pulling and connecting. When I accepted Christ, my friends became the fibers that I was braided into by His incredible power. My friends (that’s you) became something I could rely on, and they on me, through hard times.
Ropes purpose is to serve, just how we were created to love and serve our God, we are also here to love and serve and help and work for each other – we’re not here to do it alone. If I was one fiber trying to carry a heavy load I would snap, but with many fibers working for each other the load becomes easier to carry. We are so tightly braided that we pull on each other, enabling us to be stronger together, and in our relationship with Christ. Individually, we might be small and weak, but with the power of Christ we can come together and do mighty things.
This rope, my friend, is like us, and will fray into its individual fibers unless it is put under tremendous amounts of heat and pressure to cause the ends to stick together. So what I mean, is that as sisters in Christ, we will stay close, because He has braided us and fused us together through our hard times and persecution. Even the miles between us cannot separate these fibers.
We still made bracelets from ours, but you can do with yours whatever you would like. But I give you this rope my friend, saying pull on me and use me, as we pull on and use each other, and together we will do great and mighty things for our Lord.”
Completely beyond surprised, she held the letter in one hand, the rope in another, speechless, a tear running down her cheek. Turning her gaze to the dusky heavens the only thing she could think to say was “thank You.”
“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” Philippians 1:3
