Faith
We went to a prison to sing.
The prisoners who came to the concert were the usual sad and grieved and quiet ones that you expect to meet.
But while we were there, we met a man who changed our lives and way of thinking.
We met him by accident. On our way out we heard joyful singing and he rounded the corner full of joy and enthusiasm. We stopped for a while to find out a little bit about him.
He told us that he was in prison for life for killing someone. His first year was terror filled and horrifying but then his grandmother began to pray for him.
She prayed that God would give him joy, peace and happiness every day of his life in prison. He did not think he could find joy, peace, and happiness in prison!
He was scornful, but believed in his grandmother. She had always been one of those strange people who talked to God all day, even asking God’s help with her knitting and counted Cross Stitch embroidery!
Then miracles began to happen to him.
Because of his joyful attitude, he was given a very sought after job.
He was allowed to leave the grounds of the prison several times a week, and he had lots of freedom there. Your gifts will make room for you.
When he told us that he was glad that he was in prison, we were too surprised to answer.
He went on to say that in the real world he was a thief always running from the law. Because of his disobedience he often slept in alley ways and abandoned cars.
Now he had clean linen and food to eat. He knew that he would never commit another crime against an innocent person again, and so he was happier than he had ever been in his life.
He had the love of God all over him and the joy of the Lord was his strength.
We went to that prison to offer comfort to the captives, and went away encouraged ourselves.
That is how God works in the lives of his children.
We can revolutionize lives and situations by fervent prayer.
Like his grandmother we can pray for a prisoner, that they can find salvation and liberty in Christ and forgiveness of sins.
Another prison story.
A woman came to our ministry. She always seemed depressed and grieved.
Then one day she told us that her son had been in prison since he was 18 years old. He was now 36. He was with a group of boys who committed a crime.
He did not commit the crime, but had been in the car with the others. For that the judge sent him away too.
She asked if we could pray for her son, and the church prayed that GOD’s will, not ours, would be done.
He had an exemplary record for the 18 years he was there and even taught Bible classes in prison.
In a matter of six months, he was released from prison and was given a job in the church where he served faithfully.
