DOES GOD HAVE A HOBBY?
An internet definition of hobby: An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.
As a kid I remember one hobby distinctively: collecting bubble gum baseball cards. Believe me when I say that I chewed a lot of bubble gum. Ruined my teeth, I think.
Later in life, another hobby was woodworking. Having that Shopsmith Mark V combination machine certainly helped: It could saw, drill, lathe, sand, polish (talk and laugh, too)---very versatile. Lots of fun.
Most recently, my hobby has been "tub" gardening. If one's cleared ground is full of stumps and roots and uncultivatable, try 'tubs" and imported potting soil. Delicious tomato, cucumber, lettuce sandwiches are one of the rewards.
If God does have a hobby, wouldn't it be this: WATCHING THINGS GROW!
And basically, it would be in two spheres of interest:
(1) The animal/plant kingdom
(2) His creations in Christ Jesus (2 Cor 5:17)---His children
WATCHING THINGS GROW IN THE ANIMAL/PLANT KINGDOM:
Mark 4:31,32: It is like a mustard seed planted in the
ground. Although it is the smallest of all the seeds on
earth, when it is planted it comes up and becomes larger
than all the garden plants. It GROWS such large branches
that the birds in the sky can nest in its shade." GNB
Luke 12:27 Consider how the lilies GROW. They don't work
or spin yarn, but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his
splendor was clothed like one of them. ISV
Psa 65:9,10 You show your care for the land by sending
rain; You make it rich and fertile. You fill the streams with
water; You provide the earth with crops. This is how You do
it: You send abundant rain on the plowed fields and soak
them with water; You soften the soil with showers and
cause the young plants to GROW.
And let's never forget our beginnings:
~~~Gen 1:12 The earth brought forth vegetation: seed
bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing
fruit with seed in it, according to their kinds. And God saw
that it was GOOD. HCSB
~~~Gen 1:21 So God created the large sea-creatures and
every living creature that moves and swarms in the water,
according to their kinds. He also created every winged bird
according to its kind. And God saw that it was GOOD. HCSB
~~~Gen 1:25 So God made the wildlife of the earth
according to their kinds, the livestock according to their
kinds, and creatures that crawl on the ground according to
their kinds. And God saw that it was GOOD. HCSB
My take on this is that God was/is filled with great joy and jubilation in WATCHING THINGS GROW!
What is God's attitude toward people, specifically His children? Is it one of WATCHING THEM GROW?
~~~Samson: He GREW and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him... Jdg 13:24b. NIV
~~~Samuel: The Lord was with Samuel as he GREW up, and he (the Lord) let none of his (Samuel's) words fall to the ground. 1 Sam 3:19. NIV
~~~John the Baptist: And the child GREW and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel. Luke 1:80. NIV
~~~Jesus: And the child GREW and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. And Jesus GREW in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:40,52. NIV.
Well, that was THEM. What about us? IS HE WATCHING HIS CHILDREN GROW TODAY?
~~~Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things GROW up into Him Who is the Head, that is, Christ.
Eph 4:15. NIV
~~~But GROW in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Pet 3:18. NIV
~~~Like newborn babes, crave pure spiritual milk (the Word of God), so that by it you may GROW up in your salvation... 1 Pet 2:2a. NIV
God knows where the spiritual GROWING is taking place. Are we GROWING spiritually in ways that please Him?
Onto my workbench beside the lower garden I spilled a packet of tomato seeds two years ago. Never picked them up. They just lay out in the open. Had a big, old clay pot with broken, ragged edges. Filled it with potting soil as high up as possible. Gathered the seeds and planted them on the surface of the potting soil. Nothing happened. One week went by. Still nothing. After two weeks, I took a peek: 34 little tomato plants had sprouted! And God was enjoying His HOBBY, WATCHING and smiling, methinks.
