Reflection on Ordination service to the Priesthood
By Jackie O’Neal
Nourish God’s people from the riches of His grace and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and the life to come
For the priest this means realizing as St. Augustine taught that Christ loved us in our unloveliness in order to make us beautiful like Himself. This is the main reason we need to teach others to glorify God. We need to remind others what their duty to God is and it is very simple:"”Human beings are your creatures, Lord and their instinct id to praise you.”
By teaching others their duty to God, we fulfill our duty to God.
We need to help others to persevere in this life and help them realize that they are not walking alone.
To declare God’s forgiveness on penitent sinners
We are sharing God’s unconditional love with others and bringing the presence of Christ into the world. We are acting as a witness to God’s love for all humanity. We are sharing Christ’s redemptive love.
To love and serve God’s people
By loving and serving others you cleanse your own eyes to see God in others, as St. Augustine taught.
By loving and serving the people of God, you acknowledge within yourself the source of that love, and teach others to see God as the source of love within themselves.
Diligent in the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures
By reading Holy Scripture, we bring the presence of Christ into our daily lives. We become channels by which the Lord can speak to us and we grow in faith.
In addition, we are in a better position to advise others in need by sharing the Word of God. In order to share it, we must first attempt to internalize it.
Respect and be guided by the pastoral direction and leadership of the Bishop
To the priest this means embracing Holy Obedience and imitating Christ- it is part of modeling one’s life after Christ who was obedient unto death.
Endeavor to minister the sacraments of God
The sacraments bring the presence of Christ into people’s lives and that is the main endeavor of a priest. The sacraments are also actions performed by Christ to the people of God. Souls are saved and we build up the family of God. We are then undertaking to be faithful pastors.
Persevere in prayer asking God for grace for yourself and others.
We are following the teachings of Paul in staying in prayer continually, carving out time out of our day to offer our work to God and to ask for the grace to accomplish the work of God.
Intercessory prayer helps others who may not be prayerful, and so we lift others to God asking for His mercy and favor upon them, thus we are imitating Christ.
Right now, I have a beautiful vocation to the priesthood and I believe God is calling me to be a priest in His church, however I realize not all are admitted into seminary, and not all can be made priests. I also acknowledge that my gender may be an obstacle, however I know the Lord will give me the grace to accept whatever decision is made by the Bishop. I know the Lord will then show me another way to give my life to him, and I will move on with my life- giving all the glory to God.
