I've run across this new show on MTV called, Call to Greatness - five dudes on a mission to break as many crazy records as possible. It's an awesome show. Who wouldn't like watching someone attempt to break the record for the furthest marshmallow nose blow and catch!? You know, God has called each one of us to greatness. Check it out:
But he's already made it plain how to live, what to do, what GOD is looking for in men and women. It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don't take yourself too seriously - take God seriously. Micah 6.8
What? I thought the call to greatness was something more than that. I thought it meant doing something great, huge - something out of the ordinary - like breaking a world record. You see, that's what a lot of us think - that a call to greatness means being the next Rick Warren, David Crowder, Bill Gates, Doug Fields, Mother Teresa -that it means having a huge church, huge student ministry - insert what it might look like for you. And wanting those things aren't bad. It's not wrong. I'm not saying don't try big things. No! Take that leap if God tells you too. But, what if the call to greatness has to do with everyday life. Life in our town. Life in our school. Life in our job. Life in the everyday littleness we live in. In every little hour. In every little minute. In every little second. What if the call to greatness really has nothing to do with the huge extraordinary events. What if it has to do with the ordinary moments in our lives each day - you know, the little decisions we have to make. I think that is what God is saying above. He's saying, "Yo, check this out. You want to know how to be great? You want to know what greatness looks like? You want to know what you're calling is? It's in the everyday stuff man." You see, a lot of times I lose my focus by thinking about what great things I want to accomplish - dreaming about what great things I want to do. What if being focused meant making sure I am fair and just to people. That I be compassionate and loyal in my love to my wife, son, family, friends, co-workers, and others. And that I don't take myself too seriously, but instead take God seriously by walking with him. You see, Jesus came into our neighborhood. Sure he did miracles. But he lived life daily and followed Micah 6.8 in the ordinary moments of each day. Yeah, Nehemiah rebuilt the wall. That was huge. But he and others rebuilt it one stone at a time. So you see, this call to greatness is greater than anything we could ever dream of - because this call to greatness is a lifestyle - it's a lifestyle that is devoted to God, and devoted to people. That's true greatness...
live it out now.
