Family
Being a sometimes neglectful daughter, I didn’t call my Mom on Mother’s Day (ten lashes for me). So I penned this for her. Some of it probably won’t make sense because you didn’t grow up in my family, but I hope that some of you can relate to this. It’s not written as poetry because it doesn’t rhyme or even have a metered beat, but it’s something I wrote for my Mom in love.
I think this fits under a new heading called “not really poetry.”
Enjoy everyone!

Oh favorite mother of mine
I beg your forgiveness because I didn't call on Mother's Day
I have no excuse to give, so I won't even try
But I do love you very much all the time
I remember things you did when I was little
Always there when I came home from school
You sometimes made that fun dinner of toast with peanut butter and stuff
And occasionally you let us eat cookies before we had dinner
You didn't yell at me too much when I turned the furnace up real high
And nowadays I'm always turning it down
You supported me whenever I did stupid things, which was often
And you always loved me no matter what
I was always the favorite middle daughter, even though it wasn't deserved
You really gave birth to me, even though I searched for adoption papers
You kept lists of our Christmas and birthday gifts
When I found the list one year, I loved my gifts, even though I knew them ahead of time
Well, I know this isn't poetry and it's not even close
But I'm just putting words down to tell of my love for you
My life has changed so much over the years
But you have always been steadfast and a good example
If I could say that there was a strong influence in my life
It would be you as the greatest mother of mine
I know you're not perfect, as not one of us is
But to me, you're the perfect mom whom I admire and respect
Give me the choice of great wealth or great parents
And I would choose you and dad each and every time
My prayer is that you have great peace and joy
Knowing that your imperfect daughter loves you all the time
Like I said, I'm certainly not a poet
And I fail miserably on a daily basis
I give you the honor due to you this day
Not because I'm supposed to, but because I want to
Hold fast to this love you have in your heart
For it extends far beyond your children
Far beyond your grandchildren
Even now, it extends to your great grandchildren
Each of us will talk of you always with great love
For you are the Mom we can only hope to be
You live now in our lives and always in our hearts
I love you Mom, today, and forever.
Love,
the favorite middle daughter who messes up a lot

You may think you aren't writing poetry, but this is quite poetic, nevertheless! I'm sure your Mom loved your tribute. God bless you!
