Ignorance of Jesus - the Bible tells us - is something the churches have to overcome by informing the general public (Mark 16:15). If you doubt there is ignorance, knock on some doors and see what answers you get.
The general ignorance and closed-mind attitude is appalling. Mention Jesus’ name and if there is a tiny spiritual spark, the hearer will put Him in that little box called religion.
So-called Christians will say “I’ve got my religion” (usually it is a denomination) when they ought to be saying “I’ve got Christ!” Mention eternity to others and they’ll answer “I’ll be right” when it’s obvious they know nothing about Jesus and what He said.
For total non-believers, what probably flashes through their mind at the name of Jesus is a mental picture of echoing cathedrals. Also, ministers bedecked in flowing robes performing rituals as dead as that fish you had for dinner last night. TV channels love to keep resurrecting this blast from the past every Easter and Christmas. No wonder nobody wants to be part of that! It no more represents Jesus than the New York lifestyle represents the whole United States.
There is an old saying in Australia – and it probably emanated from England: “Never talk about politics or religion.” The author is satan of course, because if he gets people believing that, they are unwilling to even discuss or listen to the reasons why Jesus came to planet earth and His purpose.
So the biggest task today for the Body of Christ is to educate people in the same way that McDonalds (with their version) did in informing people on the delights of hamburgers - and what a great place their restaurants are for the family. There wouldn’t be one kid in Australia or the US who doesn’t know about McDonalds and what they represent. We must do the same in a similar but spiritual way.
Yes, it took big money for McD to do that through TV ads, giant signs, best locations, tastefully decorated premises. Churches collectively have the money to educate the public about Jesus. (That of course requires the kind of unity not yet apparent, but that’s another story.) The problem is the tithes and offerings are spent on things which have no effect on people outside the church who need to hear the message.
Having heard it, many will reject the gospel – but Jesus said so; that many would take the broad road that leads to destruction. Our role is to get the message across so that not one person in our district will go to the coffin ignorant of Jesus and His great salvation.
Upon reading this article, every pastor should take to the streets with a tape recorder, interview people and see that ignorance for him/herself.
We need a Christian revolution: the world around us must be told the gospel. It requires a change in thinking and outlook, and a drastic, radical change in how the church money and time is spent.
