Sunday at church the minister was speaking about following God in faith and simply trusting that he will always provide. This is a basic teaching of the faith and the message was well thought out and delivered. I just can’t help but think, how many people left that day with the same sort of questions that I did. “How can I have a child-like faith, when I have ‘grown-up’ responsibilities?” or “How can I fully let go and believe that everything will be alright?”
Maybe it is because I’m a man, but I think it’s just plain and simple human nature that I want to be the one in control of my life. It’s all well and good to sit in church and think, “yeah, I need to let go and let God do his work”. It’s a different matter entirely to actually follow through on these plans. “So how is all this possible then”? Good question!
What I have found is the only way to conquer the “child-like” faith issue is to realize we may never conquer the issue. I do not say this to be pessimistic, but more of a realist to say that the perfect trust of a child will not be reached daily by our average person. I would love to think that you are perfect, but I, myself, am far from it. Therefore, I am forced to think of how this Biblical truth and Divine command applies to my life.
As an average individual, with no “Superman” strength, or “Incredibles” mutations, I feel I can still have the faith to trust God with my life and give things over to him. The only thing is I cannot focus on the issues themselves. Instead, I must keep my focus on God alone. The moment I look at my circumstance, I immediately begin to think of how I can fix all the problems. The reality is, that I can’t fix them completely…only God can. Furthermore, the moment I take my focus off of God, no matter where else my focus may lie, it is failure. To put anything before God is utter failure for the Christian. The only way we can have the faith to stand in whatever circumstance and fully trust God, is if we are fully focused on him, allowing ourselves daily to be consumed by his love, enveloped by his grace, and in awe of his faithfulness. We must develop and continuum of prayer, Biblical study and worship in order to learn from the Father of Faith, what faith is all about.
