Celebrating God through My testimony
27 years later, 2005, I know now, God was speaking to me. I had made a mess of my life and was driving in my community looking for a church, with an open door, to enter and pray. God knew I needed to spend more time in the trenches, preparing for what he had in store for me and therefore did not provide an open church.
Now, let’s jump ahead to the summer of 1981. I work at Baptist Medical Center, as Operations Manager for their Housekeeping Dept. The fellow I worked with, Johnny, my boss, a Christian, ah a glimpse of God at work, had ask me several times to come some Sunday and hear his preacher preach. The church was small in numbers, probably no more than 75 to a 100 members, but on fire for the Lords work because of Pastor Ron, an ex-marine who had seen duty in Viet Nam, now working on his Doctorate in Theology. The church had a school, kindergarten through high school, and I finally agreed to go meet the School Principal and discuss entering my son. God is molding me for his will in my life. So, one Sunday Chris, my son and I went to church with Johnny and his family. After the service Brother Ron asks if he can visit us the following Tuesday night. God has me in his grasp! Tuesday night arrives and Brother Ron knocks on the apartment door and we spend some time chatting about what I do and what has brought me to Montgomery. He asks me “Tom do you know the Lord as your personal savior?” Praise the Lord, I’m where he, God, wants me to be to begin molding me to serve him! I surrendered, that night, ask Jesus into my life and am baptized and join the church the following Sunday.
1982 rolls around and I’m transferred, a promotion this time, Director of Housekeeping, Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center (TMRMC), Tallahassee, Florida. God has directed me to my new church and the first Sunday we are in town, attend and join Temple Baptist Church, Tallahassee, Florida. God molds me for the next 10 years at Temple Baptist by using me in the church choir, being an active member in their Singles Sunday School Program, becoming a leader in a youth program, became a leader in the churches Boy Scout program, developed and implemented a Girl Scout Program, so that my daughter can be a Brownie. God has molded me to serving him, where, he leads me.
In 1983, while working at TMRMC, I’d met a nurse with 2 boys and we married combining families, her 2 boys and my son. In 1985 she and I bring into the world a daughter.
God tests our strength! In 1985, while helping my brother, one weekend, Eileen is on duty at the hospital, Deanna, a baby, and the boys are with me. Bill, my brother, his wife an LPN at TMRMC, and my parents are attempting to move a tree limb felled by a storm earlier
WE serve a trusting, loving, gentle heavenly father who guides us, as Christians, through the hills and valleys of our lives.
On that Saturday morning, never would I have thought about how my life would be changed in the coming ….seconds!
While my brother, our father and I, are attempting to remove this very large tree limb, from an Oak Tree. The limb becomes dislodged and plummets to the ground, causing the branches, where I am standing, to lift taking me with them. The branch, catches me under my chin, lifts me off my feet and I return to the ground with a thud. I’m unconscious, felled by this limb, having sustained a Traumatic Head Injury!
Upon arriving at the hospital, being rushed to the emergency room, vital signs erratic, breathing shallowly, non-communicative. I’m admitted to the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit.
That night, my bodily systems, not getting correct messages from my brain, which has been forcefully bashed up against the inside of my skull, which is ridged, so I’m told, and is swollen and cells have been destroyed, vacillate from good to bad. My wife calls the Preacher and I’m lifted up to God, for his will to be done in these difficult hours.
God intervened that Saturday night, the weekend before Thanksgiving 1985 and chose to leave this child of his, that he had been nurturing, to serve him these many years since my salvation in 1981. Praise be to God for the great things he hath done.
It’s now 20 years later, I’ve served the Lord as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, an active member in the several churches, I’ve been a member in, over these many years. In 2002, another avenue of my life serving God was to open. Over the next year I’m seen by 6 different Doctors, who are unable to diagnose my illness, undergo Cervical Decompression and Fusion Surgery of an injury, most likely resulting from my injury in 1985. I’m undiagnosed, I am unable to work due to my illness, am forced to take early retirement, at age 55, apply for Social security Disability, am approved and in the summer of 1983 my retirement and SSD benefits are approved.
I’m finally given a diagnosis of Peripheral Vestibulopathy, my balance mechanism no longer works in one ear (another after effect of my head injury), but am blessed in that I’m able to do Gods work in the cyber world. Here I minister to those I interact with, God laid a burden on my heart to builds a web site “www.aplacetopray.com” and I’m in awe, daily, at how this site has become a world wide resource for people to come and voice there prayer needs and pray for others, the web site is founded on Matthew 18:20.
.
God has blessed me, by being sensitive to his will and direction in my life.
In Gods time, not ours
