Faith
As I write this, I ask that the Holy Spirit give me the words to speak that would yield to hearts of compassion and ignite our ears to hear and listen. What is it like? What is it like to have nowhere to return? What is it like? What is it like to spend hours upon hours in the dark, with no light, no communication? What is it like? What is it like to hold your baby in your arms and have nothing to give her, to give him? What is it like?
What is it like to want to bathe and can’t, to want to eat and can’t, to want to be informed and can’t. What is it like? What is it like to be associated with thieves and rapist? What is it like? What is it like to see wood and concrete in chaos where beautiful homes once stood, what is it like?
Truth is, I don’t know, I haven’t had to experience it. Yet and still, my heart aches, and my compassion expounds for those of them who do. As a woman of God, I am compelled to reach out, and not judge. I am compelled to embrace, and not turn away. I am compelled to speak out and not keep silent. I am compelled to state the truth, and not feed into a lie.
As I think of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, I liken them to the vast amounts of devastation our homeless population goes through daily. Never having a light to turn on, or a toilet to flush, never knowing where your next meal is coming from, while sleeping in awkward places and positions, in knowing this, my heart is compelled into submission asking the question, how is this so different. Are these not God’s people too? I reflect and am humbled at the blinded eye of an everyday plight that has finally reached our Nations eye.
Do not grow hot with contempt, I know the distinction between the two, however the circumstances, now, remain the same. As I search for the right words, my soul cries for the truth. What is the truth? The truth is this, God is still in control. I look to the scriptures and I find, II Corinthians 4:17 & 18 which reads: For our light affliction, which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
God is still in control, for my bible declares, We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. What is it like?
And to this I say, although I don’t know what it’s like to be one of the many victims of Hurricane Katrina, I do know what it’s like to be a praying woman, and I do know what it’s like to be a giving woman, and I do know what it’s like to be a kind woman, and I do know what it’s like to be a patient woman, and I do know what it’s like to be a loving woman, because these are gifts of the spirit my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ gifted me with, and because I have these things, I intercede on behalf of my Brothers and Sisters afflicted by Hurricane Katrina, knowing all the while, God is still in Control. For if my people who are called by MY Name should humble themselves and pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land.
